Foresight and futures for cities and the built environment

Peter Madden is a global expert on futures for the built environment, combining academic expertise with experience working at the highest levels in business, government and the voluntary sector. He provides bespoke services for a select number of clients.

Peter can deliver training and capacity building, strategic advisory, and future proofing.

“Your guidance to our team has been invaluable. The value of your input cannot possibly be measured, as we have transformed into a company that can change an industry, and change the world”
— Mike Lamach, former Chairman and CEO, TRANE Technologies

Capacity building

Peter works with leadership teams and wider staff to develop practical foresight skills — reading signals of change, making sense of megatrends, creating pathways to desired outcomes. Sessions can be a single masterclass, part of existing training programmes, or delivered as a series. They are tailored, hands-on, and designed to embed futures-thinking as a core strategic capability.

“Peter gave an excellent presentation to our Board about how digital trends would transform our operating environment, and some wise suggestions about how we might respond strategically.”
— Dipesh J Shah, OBE

We can’t predict the future, but we can prepare for it, design for it, and take responsibility for shaping it.

Strategic advisory

We can’t know the future, but we can plan better for it. Peter works with your team to scan the horizon, identify emerging trends, and run scenarios to inform and improve strategy. The result is strategy grounded not just in where you are today, but in where the world is heading.

“Every business needs a Peter. As a consummate strategist he’s always future focussed and thought-provoking. His constructive challenge and deep knowledge of our fast changing world helps unlock the best conversations at Board and senior executive levels.”
— Dame Alison Nimmo, DBE

Future-proofing

Plans, strategies, and investments are only as good as the assumptions baked into them. Peter works with organisations on masterplans and major investments to wind-tunnel, red-team, and stress-test these against a range of plausible futures. He can then suggest changes, back-cast, and help build into risk management.

“Peter is really effective in helping organisations raise their sights, look into the future and plan for resilience. He understands motivations and constraints and what is possible.”
— Jane Davidson, Chair of Wales Net Zero 2035, author of #futuregen
